Prepare for an Infectious Disease Emergency

Everyone should be personally and professionally prepared to respond to an infectious disease emergencies.

Ensure that your family is well

Create and practice family disaster plans. See the San Francisco Office of Emergency Services Preparedness site or the Red Cross family plan guide.
Place fully stocked disaster supply kits in your home and car.
Encourage your staff to develop and practice family disaster plans.

Take steps to ensure the safety of your co-workers.

Prepare an office emergency plan. See the CDC Emergency Preparedness for Business and Red Cross Workplace Preparedness site.
Provide personal emergency kits and contact numbers to staff.
Know the location of emergency exits, fire alarms, and pull boxes.
Make a telephone tree to notify staff of an emergency.

Take steps to ensure the safety of your staff and patients.

Know health care provider roles and responsibilities.
Develop and practice a clinic disaster plan using the template provided by the the California Office of Emergency Services or Califonia Primary Care Association
- Know your hospital disaster plan (including who assists patients, families and staff and who will account for them if you leave the building).
- Identify items that should be taken in an evacuation (medicine, backup data, etc.)
